Cooking with Kids

Here are few reasons why your kids should
know about cooking

*Learning to cook helps kids to learn about nutrition and
healthy eating. They are growing up with fast food and
junk at their fingertips, which is part of the reason why child
obesity is on the rise!

*Boost their self esteem. If your child needs a boost of
self confidence (and who doesn't!) cooking in the kitchen
will do just that.

*Kids will be more apt to eat what they make. Perhaps, it
is the enthusiasm of creating something themselves,
but they will be more likely to eat whatever they had a
hand in making.

*What a great way to learn life skills. This can be
especially helpful when kids are on their own and won't
have to rely on fast food and junk food to sustain them.

*They can help contribute to the family and they can feel
the importance of helping.

*They are working together as a team, to get the job done

Getting your kids to cook their own food
 will result in their "actually eating" their dinner.
Cooking with kids can be the gift that
keeps on giving; it has both short-term and
long-term payoffs.

Some of the short-term benefits:
.
* Parents get to spend quality time with their kids.
* Kids aren't spending time in front of the TV or computer
  while they're cooking.

Some long-term benefits:

*Learning to cook is a skill your children can
use for the rest of their lives.
*Positive cooking experiences can help build
self-confidence.
*Kids who cook with their parents
may even be less likely to abuse drugs.

Children of different ages exhibit varying
degrees of skill in  the kitchen, but for the
most part a three to five year old can:

* Measure dry ingredients
* Mash soft foods together
* Peel a banana or an orange
* Crack an egg into a bowl
* Shape meatballs
* Set a table and clear it after eating
* Stir or whisk ingredients together
* Tear up lettuce and spinach leaves
* Arrange foods on baking sheets and trays
* Mix Batter
* Cut soft foods with a plastic serrated knife

CHILDREN ARE ALWAYS SUPERVISED IN THE OUR
AGE- APPROPRIATE TASKS.
